How to Apply for Taxpayer Relief

With the devastation many people are dealing with in Turkey and Syria, families of those affected here in Canada may be in a position where they cannot file their taxes on time or afford to pay their taxes owed.

Usually, this would result in penalties from the CRA, with interest charged daily. But luckily, there are some situations where you may be eligible for taxpayer relief (TRP). Under certain extraordinary circumstances, the CRA may grant relief to taxpayers who can’t meet their tax obligations. This means they can waive penalties/interest and possibly reduce the tax payable.

Natural disasters are considered one of these extraordinary circumstances. To request Taxpayer Relief, you must use form RC4288, along with a letter articulating in detail your request and reasons you are applying, to the CRA.
